Resume Tips
There are many ways to write a resume and we have included a few on this
site as examples of styles that, in our opinion, work well. If you are
writing or amending your resume, you might find the following tips useful.
A resume should be brief, but without missing important information - don't
write your 'life story'. Two pages is enough for someone with two years
experience, seven pages is enough for 20 years experience.
Include all your contact details where possible
Your name and telephone number should be included in a header so they
appear on every page - resumes do get separated sometimes.
Write truthful resumes
'White lies' are often found out - probably at the interview.
The first page should determine to the reader whether or not you are
suitable for interview - the rest of the resume should provide the details.
The question the resume reader wants answered as soon as possible is: Is
this person suitable for my vacancy?
The use of bullet points is highly regarded, as is the use of a 'skills
matrix'.
Write your work history in reverse chronological order (most recent
experience first) and include the following: Company, position title, time
there (including months), brief description of duties/job role, technology
used.
Place work history early in the resume (before education details) as it
is the information people want to know about the most.
Only graduate trainees should devote considerable space to 'subjects
taken' in the education section. Education, and courses, should simply be
'When', 'Where', 'What'.
Only put referee contact information on the resume if it is okay for
someone to call them at any time - some people think that if a name and
telephone number is there, they can be called straight away.
Avoid stating the kind of role you are seeking. This sort of information
can be open to interpretation and you may not be invited to interview for
roles you didn't think of, but would like to do.
Write a covering letter with your resume highlighting details of why your
experience is suitable for the role you are applying for.
